Again at the advice of Father Lozano, an exorcist is brought in to perform the ritual - though it does not go as well as planned for those involved. While at the institution, Angela instigate enough terror to be kicked out and sent home. Heeding the advice of the priest and veteran, Father Lozano (Michael Pena) who hangs out at the hospital just waiting around to give people their last rites, Angela is sent to an institution to be observed and cured. Upon clinging to life, even after having the plug pulled on her, Angela becomes increasingly bizarre and violent. After throwing her a surprise birthday party, Angela, her boyfriend (John Patrick Amedori) and her father (Dougray Scott) are all involved in a carwreck that puts her into a coma. The Vatican Tapes revolves around Angela, (Olivia Taylor Dudley) as she coindidentally becomes possessed after she writes an article about the possibility of whether Satan and The AntiChrist could be one in the same. Unfortunately, The Vatican Tapes is not a film that can be included in that category. Even films that tend to regurgutate tropes and plots, if done well, can still be entertaining. It wouldnвЂ™t surprise me if this got confused with any other film of its kind like The Possession or The Exorcism of Emily Rose.Religion in general has been used to terrorize the masses since some of the very first horror films And as we all know, exorcism films are a dime a dozen. ItвЂ™s a very forgettable film that doesnвЂ™t try to be anything different. However, there is nothing about The Vatican Tapes that I can recommend. His very serious вЂњGodlikeвЂќ voice was hilarious to listen to, and his face-off against Demon Angela made me think I was watching Scary Movie 6.Д®ven with bad horror films, I still like to recommend them due to the comedic or violent traits.

Oh, but I have to mention the sheer comedy of Peter AnderssonвЂ™s performance.

The rest of the characters were simply two-dimensional characters paid to look like they cared about Angela. Olivia Taylor Dudley did a decent job in screaming a lot and speaking in Latin, and Pena was tolerable in portraying a concerned and dedicated priest (even though he looks like he regrets doing the film the whole time). No one really stood out in this film, which is a damn shame, because I was excited to see Michael Pena take on a horror film. It felt like the writers didnвЂ™t even try to come up with something new they put in every trope that exists and just leave it there without any sort of unique explanation.ДЄnd because the script is sub-par, that leaves the actors with crappy material to work with. I know that the setting and gist are simple, but usually there is some kind of interesting lore to go with the demon that theyвЂ™re fighting. The lore was nonexistent and the jump scares were cheap and forced. The basic plot was about demonic possession, but there was no substance to it. Did he want a found footage film and then change his mind? Or did he simply think that going from regular to shaky shots would be effective? It just made me more confused and wonder what he was trying to show the audience.Д®verything seemed so wonky and out of place that when the film ended, I still had no idea what I just watched. His shots switch from regular to shaky cam, which makes it confusing to figure out what this film is trying to be. Known for Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, this is director Mark NeveldineвЂ™s first horror film and it definitely shows. However, itвЂ™s proven to be a more ancient and powerful force that theyвЂ™re dealing with-the big D-man himself. When possession is suspected, someone from the Vatican is called over to exorcise the demon. The film is centered around Angela (see what they did there?), a seemingly ordinary twenty-seven-year-old who suddenly brings serious injury and death to those around her.
